A Vision for Liberal Democrats: Overview
How the Social Liberal Forum is developing a clearer liberal identity, deeper purpose and more compelling political vision.
About this project
This project begins from a simple concern: that the Liberal Democrats need a clearer, simpler and more recognisable sense of who we are, what we stand for and the kind of society we want to build.
The aim is to define a deeper purpose, rooted in liberal values and connected to the issues people face in everyday life, so that the party’s vision is easier to understand both inside the party and beyond it.
Why this work matters
The briefing notes for this project argue that the party is often seen as decent and well-meaning, but without a clear public identity or end goal that voters can readily describe. They also argue that wider politics is facing a deeper crisis of trust, with many people losing faith in democratic institutions and becoming more open to populist or authoritarian answers.
In that context, the project asks how modern liberalism can respond convincingly: not just by offering policies, but by setting out a clearer political purpose and a stronger democratic argument.
How the work is being done
Clarifying identity
The project is exploring how the Liberal Democrats can better define their identity in a way that connects liberal philosophy to the lives and concerns of voters.
Testing the argument
The work is intended to test and examine the main propositions in detail, breaking them down into practical themes and questions that can be explored further.
Events and listening
A series of events, panel discussions and listening exercises are being used to gather reactions, involve members and create wider participation in the work.
Building public engagement
The project aims not only to influence internal debate, but to create opportunities for engagement with activists, members and the wider public across the country.
Themes being explored
What is modern liberalism?
Exploring how liberal ideas should be expressed today and how they can provide a practical response to contemporary political pressures.
Trust in democracy
Looking at the loss of public faith in political institutions and how liberals can respond to that democratic crisis.
Identity and purpose
Considering how the party can define a stronger and more coherent sense of purpose that voters can readily understand.
Populism and authoritarianism
Examining how liberal politics can answer the rise of populist, nationalist and strongman politics.
Everyday concerns
Connecting abstract political principles to the real issues citizens confront, including insecurity, powerlessness and political disillusionment.
Practical action
Developing processes, evidence and proposals that show how liberal values can be translated into visible and credible political action.
Purpose
The purpose of this project is to help articulate a more compelling liberal vision: one that is philosophically grounded, politically relevant and capable of renewing democratic trust.
By bringing together discussion, evidence and public-facing engagement, the Social Liberal Forum aims to contribute to a clearer answer to an important question: what is the point of the Liberal Democrats, and what kind of society are we seeking to create?
